This phoenician city survived a 13-year siege by Nebuchadnezzar but fell before the military ingenuity of Alexander the Great who literally bridged the gap between the fortified island city and its mainland sector. By building a causeway, Alexander was able to forward his siege machines and bring the city to its knees.
Tyre made a name for itself exporting purple-dyed textiles throughout the ancient world. The dye itself was extracted from the murex, a sea snail which continues to live along Tyre’s beautiful coast, and was worth more than its weight in gold.
A walk through the quarter of Hay El-Ramel is reliving history. Here is Alexander’s causeway, expanded by sand and landfill into today’s isthmus with its modern buildings.

Three areas of ruins beckon the visitor. The first is located on what was the ancient walled island city. Colonnades, mosaic streets, Roman baths, and a rectangular arena occupy this seaside site. The ruins of a Crusader church dominate the second site. The third and most extensive area of ruins includes a Roman-Byzantine necropolis and the largest Roman hippodrome ever found. Uniquely built of stone, not brick, it hosted chariot races in its heyday.
Time should also be made for a walk through the narrow, quaint streets of the Christian quarter, the little fishing port with its pubs and fish restaurants, and energy permitting, the city’s souks.
In biblical times it was in Qana (Cana) near Tyre that Jesus turned water into wine at the wedding feast.

It is said that two chains of caves were discovered along the path of Al Jawz river and it is believed that they were settlements of the early Man. One of the chains and the most famous exists at about a km from the outlet of Al Jawz river. Plenty of axes, knives, drills, perforators in addition to a large set of granite pieces were retrieved from these caves which verifies the history of the early Man that dates back to thousands of years B.C. This issue has also been confirmed by the museum of granite and stony tools whose documents were lost as it was transferred to one of the French museums.

Another archaeological site and a crusade ruin at Batroun is the castle of Mousaylaha which is constructed on an isolated massive rock with steep sides protruding in the middle of a plain surrounded by mountains. It is believed that the castle dates back to the middle ages. It consists of two floors with an internal rectangular castle that can be reached by climbing few broken stairs. The internal castle overlies a set of pillars and has a well dug in its floor connected to canals carved in the rocks. The central room has two doors, they lead to the western section and the eastern section which has a narrow sand stone staircase that leads to the multi-sectioned upper floor. The walls of this castle are thick and infiltrated with several scuttles used for security of for defense. A good part of its ceiling and the observation tower are demolished.
Of the ruins of Batroun is a small pond engraved in a beach rock in front of the Phoenician wall. It is named the Pond of
the King’s Daughter after a Phoenician princess that used to bathe there.

Byblos is one of the top contenders for the “oldest continuously inhabited city” award.

Faraya-Mzaar was founded in the late 1950s by Cheikh Salim El Khazen who built the Mzaar hotel and the Jabal Dib chair lift initially known as “Le Telesiege". Simultaneously, a group of pioneers, including Sami Geammal, Robert Nassif, Dr Georges Zebouni and Pr Emile Riachi, started the development of the ski resort, building the very fist ski lifts,The group started building the first residential “Chalets” designed by architect Raoul Vernet kicking off a period of undiscontinued real estate development in the whole area of Kfardebiane. For over two decades, “Faraya Mzaar Tourisme et Sport d’Hiver S.A.L.”

The ski resort has 42 slopes and 80 kilometres of groomed tracks[citation needed]. The skiing season in Lebanon is similar in length to that of the Alps stretching over a period of 4 months[citation needed].
The peaks of the Faraya Mzaar mountain range vary between heights of 1913 and 2465 meters[citation needed]. The tallest peak, Mzaar, as well as the Nabil and Warde peaks, offer challenges for the experienced skier or snowboarder. Three other peaks are well suited for beginners, and even more are adapted to skier of intermediate level. Skiing ranges between heights of 1310m at Faraya, 1850m (Ouyoune el Simaan) to 2465m on the peak above Mzaar.
In addition, there are a number of cross-country trails.
Situated at an elevation of 1550m at the feet of Faraya-Mzaar, Faqra has monuments which included: temples, columns, altars and rock cut tombs. The temple of Faqra is partly cut out of the living rock.
On the way to the ruins of Faqra, one can see a bridge called “Jisr al-Hajar” or the “Stone Bridge” with an arch measuring thirty eight meters.

Approaching Beirut either by sea or air promises an unforgettable sight. The mountains rising behind the city are bathed in sunlight 300 days of the year and in winter, when they glisten under a blanket of snow.
The destroyed town center is once again active. Its former reputation as a crossroads between three continents and gateway to the East has been restored and modernized. The new city planners hold computer-rendered plans that show an extended coastline, a new residential area, and a touristic recreational zones built around a central park.

The 1.8 million-square-meter reconstruction project for Beirut’s Central District includes hotels, office space and residential areas. But not all the buildings will be new. Some 256 structures will be restored by 1998, plus historic mosques and churches. Beirut’s souks or markets will be reconstructed in the traditional style by 1999.
The best way to see Beirut is on foot. A good place to rest is the area of Raouche, where Beirut’s famous Pigeon Rocks stand tall and proud in the sparkling sea. Area restaurants serve local and foreign cuisine and cliff-side cafes offer a good range of snacks.

A red-roofed town set among the eastern foothills of Mount Sannine, Zahle enjoys a prime location in the Beqaa valley. Snowcapped mountains tower above it in winter, while in summer its 945 meter elevation keeps the air light and dry.
The city center spreads along both banks of the Berdawni River, with the older section of the upper elevations of the west bank. At the northern end of town is the Bardouni river valley known as Wadi el-Aarayesh (Grape Vine Valley) - the site of Zahle’s famous outdoor restaurants.
Zahle styles itself “The city of Wine and poetry”, and with good reason. In this century alone some 50 poets and writers were born here and almost as many excellent wines and araks have been produced in the area.

The romance of wine and poetry is balanced by Zahle’s more business like position as the administrative and commercial capital of the Beqaa valley (42.27% of Lebanon’s territory) as well as its rank as the country’s third largest city (population 150,000). Zahle is also an agricultural town which produces vegetables, fruit, grains and most importantly, grapes.
The Bardouni is a river that flows out of Mt. Sannine and down through Zahle. It is also a name synonymous with Lebanon’s famous mezze and the delights of outdoor dining.
The Bardouni restaurant tradition began over a hundred years ago with a few simple riverside cafes. Today it is a virtual bazaar of tree-shaded eating places known as “casinos”, every one more inviting than the next. Not surprisingly, competition is fierce, so each establishment outdoes itself with fountains, pools, and cooling shade to tempt potential customers.

Hammana sits in a lovely valley that can be seen in panorama from the village of Sofar above. Once active in the silk industry, its huge 19th century silk factory has been converted into a school.

Since 1885, Aley has been considered one of Lebanon’s most attractive summer villages. Jounieh is ideally situated on the attractive Bay of Jounieh on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean. The city is a blend of the old and the modern, built in harmony with one another.
